New Construction

At The Solid Rock Stone Masonry, we pride ourselves on matching our work to the unique vision of each client. In this project, we utilized Over-Sized Tennessee Fieldstone to give the feel of a story book house bursting with character!

Image

Wine Cellar

Our client in this project wanted to add a premium wine cellar on a lower level of his house. Working in consultation with Hayes Construction of Banner Elk, we created a beautiful wine cellar featuring Squared Tennessee Field Stone arches with plaster walls.

Image

Outdoor Fireplace

Outdoor fireplaces are becoming increasingly popular in both new construction and remodels/additions. We built this gorgeous fireplace with Thin Tennessee Field Stone. To add some variety and break up the pattern, we staggered the design with a few large rocks stood up on end. Because the mortar is recessed back from the face of the rock on this fireplace, it called "Dry Stack".

Image

Patio

We laid out this patio at the Linville Golf Club with Gray Crab Orchard Flagstone. This stone is very flat and has a slight texture, reminiscent of a fine grade sandpaper. It also comes in a Brown/Tan variation.

Image

Renovation

Aside from working on new construction, we are often hired to renovate/upgrade older properties. This stunning elevated flagstone patio is laid over arches made of Square Patterned Tennessee Field Stone.

Image

Fireplace

This amazing home was built by Quality Builders of Banner Elk. They hired us to build this massive Great Room fireplace. Utilizing a Dry Stack style, we built it with Thin Tennessee Field Stone with 10-20 percent larger stones.

Image

Swimming Pool Wall

Aside from chimneys and patios, we also build beautiful and safe retaining walls. This pool-side retaining wall is laid in a Rubble Pattern. Utilizing a full range of stone sizes, the client wanted to see a visible mortar joint between the stones.

Image

Outdoor Living

If you enjoy entertaining family and friends, you might want to consider adding a fabulous outdoor living space for cooking and relaxing. This spectacular area was constructed by Howell Construction of Linville, NC. We were hired as masons to lay the rock. We utilized a Square Patterned Tennessee Field Stone with Dry Stack joints.

Image

Fireplace

Not all fireplaces have to be massive. This fireplace is located in a home office and is accented by columns, an arch opening, and a recessed TV.

Image

Repair/Renovation

One of our specialties is matching new stone work with existing stone work. Here is a perfect example. After a major renovation, this 90 year old house needed a new chimney, but the home owner wanted it to match the "older look" of the original house as closely as possible. We took the old chimney down, saved the rock, and reconstructed it with modern materials and safe methods. Our client agreed that the "new" chimney looked identical to the original chimney.

Image

New Construction

Our clients come to the mountains to enjoy the magnificent views. To get the best views, they frequently build high on one of the area mountains, which results in tall columns and high decks. There is no better way to make your columns and decks blend into the mountain environment than by using natural stone.

Image

Bedroom Fireplace

This modern looking bedroom fireplace has gas and decorative ceramic balls for a unique look. The surround and hearth are Indiana Limestone with a base of Tennessee Field Stone.

Image

Slate Floor

Stone is an excellent building material for both inside and outside your house. Here is a great example. The elegant stone flooring featured in this photo, Blue Stone, looks fantastic both outside and inside, as seen in this foyer.

Image

Ashlar Pattern

For this Linville office building, built by Alex Johnson Construction of Newland, we used a Gray Crab Orchard stone for their chimney. We laid it with random sizes of squares and rectangles.

Image

Retaining Wall

Sensitive to the natural environment, we built this serpentine wall at Crossnore School to create more space for a needed vehicle turn-around. It is laid with a combination of creek rock, Round Brown and Cane River rock.

Image

Outdoor Kitchen

We have helped design and build many cooking areas for individual and community use. A grill, burners, fireplace, coolers, sinks, tables and seating can all be incorporated into a very usable space.

Image

Repair/Renovation

When the Grove Park Inn did a major renovation prior to their 100th Anniversary, Hendricks Construction of Charlotte hired us to do the stone work. We received much praise and recognition for being able to so well match the stone and style of the grand old building, that few could tell that our work wasn't part of the original building.

Image

Floor & Stairs

This entry is a great combination of color, texture and style. It has Pennsylvania Blue Stone flooring, Indiana Limestone steps, dark hardwood flooring accented by Tennessee Field Stone on the walls.

Image

Patio

We employ two different methods for installing flagstone patios, depending on our client's preferences. The beautiful patio/entertaining area featured in this photo is laid on a bed of gravel and sand with sand between the joints, which gives it a more rustic feel. The second way to lay a patio is to mortar the flagstone onto a cement pad and grout the joints between the rock for a cleaner finish. This style of patio has the added feature of being able to be washed off.

Image

Driveway Column

Whether new or old, columns at an entrance have great "curb appeal". This stone work, after decades of harsh mountain weather, had to be taken down for repair and restoration. We replaced it exactly like it had been originally built, but looking "brand new".

Image

Landscaping

Boulders and rustic slabs make a great combination for downhill steps. The boulders featured in this photo are Round Brown Creek Rock and the slabs are Chocolate Grey. If you are interested in a more uniform and less "rustic" look, we would recommend using Crab Orchard rock.

Image

Fireplace

You can add a real WOW factor to any stone project by incorporating a few large stones. This fireplace is a prime example of how a few large stones can add an extra custom feel. Large stones can also be used for one piece hearths open underneath for wood storage, door headers, and outdoor seating featuring handed picked boulders.

Image

Fire Pit

Outside entertaining and relaxing are both easy with a little help from a fire pit. This one is cased by Tennessee Field Stone Boulders and the one piece wall caps make a great seat as well as protecting the integrity of the wall from water seeping into the top.

Image

New Construction

Another one of our specialties is building stone arches. Whether over a door as in this picture, or a free standing arch with a gate, we have the expertise and experience to build it right.

Image

New Construction

This magnificent home, built by Howell Construction of Linville, features multiple stone arches that we built. The client was so impressed with our work on this very complicated project that he freely offered to be a reference for anyone interested in hiring us for similar projects.

Image

Cement Balusters

Nothing makes a statement of stability and strength like custom cement handrails. We have the experience and training to help you with ALL your stone masonry needs!

Image

Fireplace

Fireplaces can come in all shapes and sizes. This cozy little fireplace features bench seating and Pennsylvania Blue Stone surround and flooring.

Image

Cairn

An old Scottish custom was to build a stone cairn as a symbol of solidarity whenever the clans came together in friendship. We built this memorial of friends in the Old World Style to commemorate the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games.

Image

Parking Curbs

Whether in a development parking area or a private residence, stone curbing gives a clean, classic, and precise border between asphalt, gravel, grass or mulch.

Image

Natural Cut Stone

In some applications, an architect, builder or home owner wants to use a light weight natural stone with a full thickness "look" to it. We accomplish this objective by using stone that has had the back sawed off of it, which makes it much lighter in weight. This cut stone is then veneered onto the walls. Image

Landscaping Wall

Fountains and water features are another way to add beauty and serenity to a garden or yard.

Image

Cultured Stone

Manufactured stone is similar to cut stone in that it is also veneered onto walls. It has many styles and colors to choose from. For more examples, please visit CulturedStone.com.
